About

Are you a Barnes?

This website is dedicated to researching the genealogy of the Barnes family, originating in Britain in 1066 AD with the conquest of Britain. Hugh de Bernières, the Norman conqueror, settled his progeny in Britain and over the centuries the Barnes family spread all over Great Britain.

The Barnes Genealogical Society gathers information and resources from around the world to help formalize and digitize the Barnes family legacy.

Present-to-Past Records are visible on various platforms online. While DNA research is accelerating to piece together the Barnes puzzle in ways the written record no longer can do.

So if you’re a Barnes, welcome home! Add our knowledge to yours and we’ll record our story together!

*There are other families often erroneously associated with the Bernières-Barneses. The Irish “Beorns”, the French “Berns”, the Jewish “Parnes” and the Norse “Barns”. These phonetic cousins sometimes followed a similar speech mutation as Hugh de Bernières descendants did. However, the Norman-British Barnes line traces independent of those lines and, thankfully, various records out there can document this.
