Resources

Several online resources are available for independent Barnes researchers anywhere with an internet connection.

Totally Free, extensive research and highly collaborative

FamilySearch.org is the premiere genealogical site on the internet. It is owned and operated by the Church of Jesus Christ and offers free access to all it’s features to anyone. The genius of FamilySearch is the collaborative tree: all users point to the same deceased ancestors. This eliminates duplicate work and compounds research. The Barnes family is well documented in FamilySearch.

Paid subscription, extensive research, DNA-offered and selectively collaborative

Ancestry.com is the most popular genealogy website in the world. Ancestry’s DNA testing is the most widespread DNA testing service in the world, with DNA linking features and collaboration that can break through some otherwise impossible research barriers. Ancestry offers genealogy services, very helpful community message boards and a unique emphasis of immigration records. Ancestry requires a paid subscription, but they gotta make their money somehow!

Paid subscription, unique records somewhat collaborative.

The crew at FindMyPast.com has done a great job digitizing records from the British Isles. These images are unique to FindMyPast. With a paid subscription, a user can surf their digitized records and build a tree. While the tree features are alright, the unique records are where the value really is.
